Housing for the Homeless

The Black Hills VA is facilitating a multi-day Veterans Stand Down on March 1st in Kyle, SD and March 2nd in Mission, SD. Stand Down events bring community organizations and VA services together in an effort to assist our local veterans. We are seeking local agencies willing to participate in the event by providing services or information at either of the events. These events serve as a great outreach opportunity and we would appreciate your support.

If you or your agency are interested in supporting our local veterans, please contact Jamison Hild with Health Car for Homeless Verterans at 605-490-8587 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Please feel free to spread the word and invite veteran friendly organizations as well as the veterans you already serve.

South Dakota Housing for the Homeless Consortium is currently soliciting pre-applications for permanent supportive housing projects for homeless individuals and families. Eligible projects include:

  • New permanent supportive housing projects where all beds will be dedicated for use by chronically homeless individuals and families;
  • New rapid re-housing projects for homeless individuals and families who enter directly from the streets or emergency shelters and youth up to age 24.

South Dakota Housing Development Authority (SDHDA), in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), is encouraging public participation in upcoming housing and community development meetings.

On January 26th, 2016, South Dakota will be conducting our Annual Point-In-Time Homeless Count and Housing Inventory Chart (HIC) in which we count homeless beds statewide.  These are required by HUD as this information is collected on a nationwide level and reported to Congress as well as used for potential funding opportunities here in South Dakota.  We need your help.

Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc. (DTSF), participating downtown retailers as well as community members are giving back in two big ways this holiday season: Downtown Gives coupon book sales to benefit NAMI Sioux Falls and a Give Real Change charity drive for the homeless community.

Downtown Gives coupon books go on sale First Friday, November 6th, at 25 partcipating retail locations. Sales of the $15 coupon books will benefit NAMI Sioux Falls and feature great deals just in time for holiday shopping. Books will be sold through December 2015 and coupons are valid through March 31, 2015. Books can be purchased at any of the 25 participating retail locations as well as the DTSF office (230 S Phillips Avenue).

The public is also encouraged to Give Real Change to support the homeless community. An online donation campaign at dtsf.com/give-real-change also launches this Friday, November 6th, and runs through Giving Tuesday, December 1st. Those who do not wish to donate online can mail donation checks to the DTSF office at 230 S Phillips Avenue, Suite 102 c/o Give Real Change.

Give Real Change donations will directly benefit Bishop Dudley Hospitality House, St. Francis House and the Sioux Empire Homeless Coalition.

"Our growing community has so many needs that DTSF wanted to expand the Downtown Gives charity umbrella to directly benefit those shelters and organizations working hard to address homelessness through the new Give Real Change effort," said DTSF Communications Director Brienne Maner.

DTSF will launch a comprehensive social media campaign scheduled for the month which will feature compelling imagery courtesy of Reistroffer Design and a hashtag: #GiveRealChange. Follow the DTSF Facebook page to get updates througout the month.

"We encourage the public not only to give back, but to share with their networks via social media and word of mouth. Chris Reistroffer of Reistroffer Design and Chad Campbell of the Bishop Dudley House have coordinated to create some very compelling imagery which we hope will have an impact in our online efforts to draw attention to the needs of our homeless community," Maner said.

National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week also falls in the month of November, which is a chance to contribute to a national movement. As part of the movement, Bishop Dudley Hospitality House is hosting an Inaugural Sleep Out event on Thursday, November 19. Click herefor more information.
