On January 26th, 2016, South Dakota will be conducting our Annual Point-In-Time Homeless Count and Housing Inventory Chart (HIC) in which we count homeless beds statewide. These are required by HUD as this information is collected on a nationwide level and reported to Congress as well as used for potential funding opportunities here in South Dakota. We need your help.
For the Homeless Count, over a 24 hour period, we are required to survey all persons:
- Staying in an emergency homeless shelter;
- A transitional housing program dedicated to homeless individuals and families;
- Persons staying in a motel/hotel that is being paid for by a source other than the tenant (if the tenant is paying for the hotel themselves, do NOT count them); and
- Persons sleeping outside, in cars, tents or in places not meant for human habitation
It is imperative that all agencies that serve the homeless in your communities (state offices, shelters, law enforcement, churches, city/county agencies etc.) work together to ensure all homeless individuals and families are surveyed during this time.
For the two largest cities, Sioux Falls and Rapid City, there are coordinators in your area that will be working to conduct the Chart and the Count correctly. All others in the region, Lisa Bondy will be your contact person.
