PIERRE, S.D. – As the South Dakota Housing for the Homeless Consortium prepares South Dakota’s Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness, they are asking for public input.
“The problem of homelessness, many say, is unsolvable,” said Mark Lauseng, Executive Director. “Although helping homeless people with emergency shelter and transitional housing addresses the immediate need of our state’s homeless, having a significant impact on reducing the number of homeless individuals and families is more difficult.”
The Department of Housing and Urban Development has requested each state to create a Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness. This plan will outline key strategies for addressing homelessness such as increasing permanent supportive housing; systems prevention with discharge planning from correctional facilities, foster care systems and mental health facilities; outreach and sustainable housing efforts for individuals and families currently on the street; emergency prevention assistance such as rent, mortgage, utility assistance, case management and Rapid Re-Housing programs to quickly move them from shelters into permanent supportive housing.
The Consortium asks that the public give input on homelessness in their areas and potential solutions by completing a short online survey.
The survey can be found at: TAKE SURVEY
Survey responses will be accepted until September 26, 2014.
